Queen Victoria Annex Elementary:Â Playground Renewal Project
A new space to play and learn
Welcome to our campaign website!
Queen Victoria Annex Elementary School's Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is raising funds to build a dynamic new playground and natural outdoor learning space for our school and community.Â
Please read on to find out more about our plans and how you can get involved!

About our COMMUNITY
Grandview Woodland
Our community is vibrant and busy!
Festivals such as Car-Free Day, Italian Day, the McSpadden County Fair and our school’s own Spring Festival create great community spirit and bring thousands of visitors to our neighbourhood.
The population in our neighbourhood is diverse, we have lots of young families - children at our school come from a wide range of households.

Everyone is welcome.
Our CURRENT Playground
Why it needs replacing...

Wood
All wooden play equipment is being removed by the Vancouver School Board due to issues with safety and maintenance.
QVA's playground is the last wooden play structure in a Vancouver school but it will be removed in 2020.
Condition of the equipment
The wooden play structure has served our school admirably - kids and parents love it! - but the equipment is showing its age...

Rust, chipped paint, areas of rot, algae and general wear and tear.

Limited play options
Our wooden structure has some great features but the range of play equipment is very limited.
The structure is also very high and can be daunting, inaccessible and unsafe for younger or less able students.
Our kids deserve better
The playground is a really important part of school and community life. It is a social hub for students before school, at recess, lunch and after school, and for the community outside of school hours.

Our playground is a key resource to help our kids learn to play!

We can do better.

Our NEW Playground
We want to build a playground that is:
DYNAMIC
ACCESSIBLE
VISUALLY EXCITING and GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY
NATURE-FOCUSSED
AN EXTENSION OF OUR SCHOOL’S LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
FOR OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY
DYNAMIC
A wide range of play equipment
A range of heights and complexity
Different colours, materials and textures
Using all the available space
Creating a ‘circuit’ for fast-paced, energetic play

ACCESSIBLE
Designed primarily with children age 5-12 in mind
Areas that are safe and suitable for younger children
Including a quieter area with play equipment suitable for children with sensory issues

VISUALLY EXCITING & GOOD VALUE
We want our playground to look amazing... for a long time!
Landscape Structures make playground equipment that is:
Beautifully designed to appeal to children and adults
Supplied in a wide range of colours
Engineered to withstand aggressive use
Reasonably priced and great value for money!

NATURE FOCUSSED
We cannot install wooden play equipment but we do plan to include the following natural elements...
a garden area with planters and potting table
log-slice ‘cladding’ on our fence, planters and borders
a small outdoor learning area
additional trees and drought resistant shrubs

AN EXTENSION OF OUR SCHOOL'S LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
An outdoor learning space and garden will provide our teachers with a dedicated space to conduct lessons out in the fresh air and promote connections to nature.

FOR OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY
This playground is being designed for both our school and our wider community.
QVA’s grounds serve as a gathering place for everyone in our neighbourhood.  We are a small school but our grounds are used by many more! A wonderful new playground would become the centrepoint of this community hub.
